Far Left Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has tried to quietly unleash a new and totally unaccountable federal police force on America by opening Capitol Police regional field
offices in California and Florida “to investigate threats to lawmakers.”
Why this is necessary no one can explain. Since the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, the government has brought charges against more than 530 individuals. NPR's Ryan Lucas reported that prosecutors say it's likely to be one of the largest investigations in American history. The investigation by the FBI is ongoing, with more arrests happening weekly.
By the way, NPR is maintaining a database of all individuals charged.
What makes this move by Speaker Pelosi such a threat to liberty is that the Capitol Police are literally accountable to only Democrats - Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer are their only bosses.
The Capitol Police have no civilian oversight, the Capitol Police Board is comprised of political appointees of the House and Senate leadership, they are not subject to the Freedom of Information Act, their jurisdiction outside the U.S. Capitol Complex is unclear, as is their accountability to courts for the purposes of habeas corpus and other civil rights protections.
There’s absolutely nothing to prevent the Capitol Police from showing up, arresting someone in Florida or California and taking them back to Washington DC in a domestic version of the infamous “renditions” conducted on foreign soil as part of the war on terror.
And as the shroud of secrecy that has been thrown over the killing of Ashli Babbitt has proven, when the Capitol Police don’t want to answer questions there’s little Americans, even the families of people they have killed, can do about it.
Even though the Capitol Police are responsible only to the majority party, in this case Pelosi and Schumer, according to reporting by Chris Marquette of Roll Call, none of the lawmakers who serve on committees whose jurisdiction includes the Capitol Police said the force charged with protecting and securing Congress should be subject to the 1966 Freedom of Information Act that requires federal agencies to disclose a large amount of government information to the public.
How unaccountable are the Capitol Police?
As Mr. Marquette’s reporting explained, Congress is not subject to the law, and the Capitol Police, as a component of the legislative branch, is also exempt from any FOIA request.
This reality leaves documents as fundamental as inspector general reports shielded from the public. On May 19, when CQ Roll Call asked, through FOIA, for annual Capitol Police inspector general reports dating back to 2015, James W. Joyce, a senior counsel for the department, said they need not complete the document request.
Joyce wrote in response to the email request from Roll Call: “please be advised that the United States Capitol Police, as a legislative branch entity, is not an ‘agency’ as defined by 5 U.S.C. §§ 551 et seq., under the Freedom of Information Act. Therefore, the USCP is not subject to the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act.”
A House Administration Committee aide, when asked for a Capitol Police IG report, said he was told those reports are “law enforcement sensitive” and “not a matter of public record.”
In a separate request for a 2020 USCP inspector general report, spokeswoman Eva Malecki told Roll Call “the Office of Inspector General is an independent office from the Department, and reports directly to the Capitol Police Board. Where the Inspectors General of the executive branch are required to post reports and audits on their web sites, the USCP IG statute does not require such public disclosure of its reports.”
Taken by itself the expansion of the completely unaccountable and secrecy-shrouded Capitol Police would be a gross threat to liberty but coupled with recent plans announced by the Biden administration it is nothing short of frightening.
While the Southern Border remains an open gate for terrorists and drug cartels to enter the United States, Katie Pavlich reported on a recent statement by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who wrote, "Recent events, including the January 6th attacks on the U.S. Capitol, have highlighted that domestic violent extremism poses the most lethal and persistent terrorism-related threat to our country today. Addressing this threat is an urgent priority of the Biden-Harris Administration and of this Department. We will continue to work with our partners to immediately address it…".
So, what exactly will this "investigation" entail? And what specifically is Mayorkas trying to "identify?" And who are the Department of Homeland Security’s “partners?”
One good guess is that the newly expanded and completely secret and unaccountable Capitol Police will be among them.
