Cancel Culture Loses: Hawley’s Book Back On The Presses

The Federalist’s Mollie Hemingway scooped the rest of the conservative media with the

announcement that conservative publishing powerhouse Regnery Press has picked-up Senator Josh Hawley’s much-anticipated book “The Tyranny of Big Tech.”

You will recall that Simon and Schuster canceled the book Jan. 7, quickly caving to a pressure campaign organized by leftist activists after the Jan. 6 brawl at the U.S. Capitol and Senator Hawley’s decision to challenge the slate of tainted electors submitted by Pennsylvania and Arizona.

The New York-based publishing conglomerate claimed, without evidence, that Hawley was complicit in the storming of the U.S. Capitol the day prior because of his leadership role in debating questions of election integrity in the 2020 election.

Ms. Hemingway reports Simon and Schuster had not previously indicated to Hawley they would cancel him for objecting to the failure of some states to “follow their own election laws.” When various Democrats up to and including Sen. Barbara Boxer objected to previous Electoral College votes in 2004 and 2016, they were not the victim of cancel mobs. In fact, they were praised by the media and Democratic Party leaders.

When Hawley announced his plans to object in late December, he said he would also raise awareness of “the unprecedented effort of mega corporations, including Facebook and Twitter, to interfere in this election, in support of Joe Biden.” Those social media companies banned the distribution of completely accurate news about the Biden family’s business with Communist China. A study showed that the censorship was so effective, it may have swung the election for Biden.

The day after the attack on the Capitol, Simon and Schuster announced it was dropping Hawley’s book, which had been scheduled for a June publication date. The day before the attack, Hawley’s wife and child had been threatened at their home by a leftist mob trying to pressure him away from making objections.

In an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal Thomas Spence, president and publisher of Regnery Publishing made the case, not just for the good business publishing Senator Hawley’s book will undoubted bring the company, but for the important role publishers have in a free society:

Some 250 self-described “publishing professionals”—mostly junior employees of major houses—have issued a statement titled “No Book Deals for Traitors,” a category in which they include any “participant” in the Trump administration.
Readiness to silence someone because of who he is or whom he associates with is often called the “cancel culture,” but I prefer an older term—blacklisting—whose historical associations expose the ugliness of what is going on. Not so long ago, publishing professionals would have been horrified to be accused of it. Today they compete to see who can proclaim his blacklist with the fiercest invective…
An independent publisher is vulnerable to today’s Jacobins in many ways, for it relies on large partners to print, distribute and sell its books. Now that dissent from the latest version of progressive orthodoxy is equated with violence and treason, my colleagues and I know we could be next. But we choose to fight back.
We’re proud to publish Mr. Hawley’s book, which his original publisher has made more important than ever. We don’t have to agree with everything—or anything—Mr. Hawley does. We ask only if his book is well-crafted and has something true and worthwhile to say. The answer is yes.
The statement of the 250 “publishing professionals” shows that today’s censors recognize no limits. I appeal to the real professionals of publishing, some of whom may be the bosses and mentors of those who signed that mindless rant: Remember that you are Americans. Americans argue, write, preach, campaign and vote. They don’t blacklist.
